In 1919, exactly a century ago, Leo J. Wahl invented the world's first electromagnetic clipper: the 'Model 66'. Since then, Wahl has become a household name and market leader in hair-cutting machines. By the end of 1920, the company had already sold thousands of clippers to barbers. Today, around 3,300 people work for the company worldwide, and its products are available in 180 countries.
Brand innovation and history
The development of the first clipper led to a range of innovations in electromagnetic motors. In the 1960s, the company introduced a unique shaver with a flexible cutting blade. In 1967, the first cordless, rechargeable trimmer was developed. The company is also responsible for inventions such as a cordless soldering iron, a variable-speed motor-magnet clipper, and a clipper designed for 'black hair'.
Did you know that the founder held more than 100 patents? He passed away on May 20, 1957.
Legendary clippers and trimmers
Over the years, the brand has introduced several classic products that are still available today. Take the best-selling corded clipper, for example: the Super Taper, formerly known as the S89. The 5-Star Legend is also worth mentioning: a legendary clipper designed specifically for barbering techniques. Both models remain popular with barbers and people who cut their own hair or their family's hair at home.
Wahl today
In 2019, the brand celebrated its centenary with a limited-edition, vintage-style cordless clipper, which has since become a collector's item. But it hasn't stopped there: even today, the company regularly releases new models with smarter motors, longer battery life, and improved cutting comfort. Whether you are looking for a reliable clipper for home use or a professional model for precision work, you are likely to find a suitable option.
